The London Burger from Two Nights Only |
As before, it was a quality meat and booze fuelled evening. Here's how it went down...
This Sunday, 24 February 2013, Red Iron Burgers is kicking off a YOU vs FOOD 'food challenge' day with mega milkshakes, extra hot wings made with ghost chillis and, for all lovers of this blog, a GIGANTIC BURGER!

Claiming to be Europe's largest burger challenge, The Beast from Burgers at Blacks is a 7lb behemoth waiting to be taken down, and intrepid Hamburger Me! reporter Phil Tyler is the man to do the job...

The Beast Burger |
A couple of months ago I was given the heads up on a Burger Supper Club from one of my favourite London burger chefs (check out his Wenlock & Essex Burger) that was going to kicking off in September eponymously for two nights only.
I offered some tickets to give away on the blog and given some pre-event info (check it here), but thought I'd give you an overview on how the whole thing went down, and why you should keep an eye out for tickets for the next one that is already being planned!
Hosted in the Exmouth Arms, Exmouth Market, the menu was a cracker, and I urge you to check out the designs for the evening by Limited Edition Design.

It's almost here.
Two nights only, the burger-focused evenings from James Morgan and Chris Todd [you know, the one I wrote about a few weeks ago] have their tickets going on sale at 19:00 on Thursday 23 August. To be in with a chance of grabbing one, keep your eyes peeled for the link on their twitter account http://twitter.com/twonightsonly and their facebook page, and make sure you don't miss out.
There is, however, another way to get your hands on some. Burger Me! has two tickets to give away to two avid readers of m'blog. To enter the draw to win a ticket, simply sign up for the Burger Me! mailing list.* I'll draw the competition over the Bank Holiday weekend and two lucky winners on the mailing list will win tickets!

There is no doubt there are some great burger joints popping up in London right now.
The Spectacular Patty & Bun has just finished it's latest run in The Endurance, Soho, the Lucky Chip Residency at The Seabright Arms on Hackney Road is well established, and their Slider Bar has just opened in Covent Garden too. There are also a host of others appearing, Burger Breakout, Burger Bear, Fattburger, Tommi's Burger Joint, Burger & Lobster, and Dirty Burger - not to mention Honest Burgers coming to Soho and Daniel Young's BurgerMonday events...
In the midst of the burger frenzy, I've caught up with Chris and James, a duo who have an 'unreal burger experience' in their sights, and a point to prove.
Riding House Cafe is an achingly cool canteen-style restaurant situated halfway between Regent's Park and Oxford Circus, and it was the scene for a tense burger-off between the underweight challenger cheeseburger versus their overweight champion longhorn burger.
The occasion was an inpromptu work dinner with a colleague, hereafter known as 'The Aussie', and as my first visit to Riding House, we settled on covering off the both burger options on the menu. We had a couple of small plates to start, just to whet our appetites before the oncoming burger onslaught, hot and sour buttermilk chicken wings with celery blue cheese dip, and seared scallops, both were excellent and had us whipped our taste buds up into a frenzy before the main show.
Location:
Gaucho in London is synonymous with Argentinian beef. They have a monopoly on the stuff. I was walking past their Gaucho Smithfield outpost just the other day, and as I'm always scouting for places that do a burger, and as I've eaten 35 day aged Argentinian beef steak at Gaucho a number of times, and absolutely love it, I made a bet their burger was going to be pretty tasty too!
The Gaucho visual identity is sleek and sophisticated (the colour black has long been used to market luxury goods based on its association with power and exclusiveness), and the interiors of their restaurants reflect that with dark wood tables, cow hide chairs, and subdued lighting. Even on table the luxury feel is extended with large shiny silver cutlery, brilliant white napkins, and thick cubed-crystal candle holders, all the way down the to cool, thin menus that concertina out to reveal their wares. Gaucho sponsorship of the London polo extravaganza lends nothing but gravitas to this exclusive brand postitioning. But sod all the marketing crap, do they make a good burger?
