[Infographic] The journey of a burger: From field to fist

I love a good infographic. In fact the infographic I created in 2013 to highlight London's burger preferences, and create London's first set of Burger Top Trumps was even one of my most popular posts for a few months. So as as I come to the end of my Meat Free January, I've been thinking about the length of the supply chain, and the amount of work that goes into making that perfect burger – something which I'm guilty of completely taking for granted.

For my 2014 infographic, therefore, I've taken those thoughts and build what I'm calling 'The Journey of a burger: From field to fist'. I think it's really important to be aware of what goes into creating the most versatile of comfort foods, the hamburger...before you stuff it in your face!

[Meat Free January] Veggie Burger from Tommi's Burger Joint

Tommi's Burger Joint on Thayer Street, just a hop, skip, and a jump from Oxford Street, is normally a place of banging rock tunes, smoking grilled beef patty frenzies, and crazy/smiley Icelandic chefs.

This visit is altogether more muted, it's like my senses have been dulled from the lack of meat over the last three weeks (I'm under a week away from the end of my self-imposed burger-free wilderness of meat free January), and the familiar, comforting steak and bearnaise steam that usually fills the restaurant is thinner, somehow less welcoming.

Right, man up. It's veggie burger time, and I'm going in.

[Meat Free January] Dirty Burger 'Dirty Cop Out' burger

The Vauxhall outpost of Dirty Burger is fast becoming a regular haunt for me - no least because I'm in receipt of a magic discount card giving me 20% off food, for life (Yes, I know a £5 cheeseburger becomes a £4 cheeseburger....but to quote the strapline of a well known yet not performing so strongly supermarket, every little helps).

As I'm currently in the throes of meat free January, there was to be a total hiatus on visits to Dirty Burger and of course cheeseburgers HOWEVER it turns out that the Dirty Burger monthly special, The Dirty Cop Out, is actually 100% vegetarian. So, once more into the breach...

[Meat Free January] Patty & Bun 'Dig It' Veggie Burger

There's always a slight sense of disappointment when revisiting some of my best rated and favourite burgers in London, only to masochistically ignore the joys of their unctuous beefy creations, and instead order the vegetarian option.

Patty & Bun, one of London's best burgers, delivers just that feeling. As I continue my meat free January - the second year I've sacrificed the pleasures of the flesh for the pleasures of the field - I can't help but crave. So I order the only burger on the menu that I'm allowed - the portobello 'Dig It' mushroom burger...

Meat Free January 2014 - The London Veggie Burger Review

Well, hello 2014.

Another year, another set of new year resolutions I'm never going to keep. Don't ask. And another January where I'm going meat and alcohol free. Needless to say the cravings have started, and I want bacon all the time, but so far I've been resolute.

In January 2013 I embarked on a month long review of the various veggie burgers available to non-meat eaters (and detox suckers) available in London - and this year I plan to continue my veggie burger research across a selection of other London burger joints.

You can check out my reviews of the various establishments I tried in 2013 below - and keep an eye out for my new reviews in 2014:
